There is an interesting fact about the history of Mataram, a great kingdom in Java on a book titled Babad Tanah Jawi. Once upon a time, Raden Sutawijaya sat on a rock and prayed to Almighty for the problems that he had with his Kingdom so that its citizen being wealth and healthy. Sutawijaya's charismatic aura makes the Queen of the Southern Sea awaken and came to Sutawijaya. This is why then this place called Parang Kusuma, Parang in javanese means rocks and kusuma means aura or spirit. Mesmerized by the glorious Queen, Sutawijaya humbly begging for Queens favour. The Queen accepted to fulfill Sutawijaya's wishes on two conditions. First, Sutawijaya have to married her and second Sutawijaya must make a ritual on every 30th of Rejeb [Javanese callendar] where he must bring offrings to the Queen. And that July 23rd 2009, the ritual being held once again, showing us the vertically and horizontally relation between Javanese and the Almighty.

Merapi, a well known active volcano that located in north Jogjakarta -Indonesia, has been erupted for 68 times since 1548. On May 15th 2006, Merapi blasted once again, sent raw deadly material to the surface. Lots of people suffered from this great anger of Merapi, some even lost everything including their own life.

The eruption itself for some is a gift from the Almighty. Fertile soil, good quality sand and rock becoming precious things for Kali Woro residence, Klaten - Central Java, Indonesia. Most of them mining the sand and rock at the dead river of Kali Woro, which under the foot of great Merapi. Putting live at stakes under the great northern song just to balanched the harmony of life.

This is an on-going project, where I set out a coplete story not only on the mining activity but how their ordinary life while at home, on their neighbourhood, traces their conection betwen Merapi and the Javanese tradition, how Merapi's existence to them. The life issue i.e economic benefit from the sand and rock, the enviromental issue and the highly risk workspace and how they deal with those matter is what I am searching for.

Gelung Gunung: the art of hair

Our hair is our crown. This old phrase simply told us about the use of our hair from another several uses of hair. It protects us from heat, cold, sweat and dust and our hair style reflects our soul. It describes us from the way it is, said Rakhmad Murti Waskito a.k.a Bakso, the choreographer and director of the 'Gelung Gunung' performance at Petung Kidul Village, Magelang - Central Java on July the 6th 2008.

The idea comes from the fact that there are exotic gembel-hair styles that found on the people who lived on the Merbabu clift such as, gembel upo, gembel gimbal and gembel kucir. For Merbabu people hair style doesn't just a matter of 'looking good' but it is art, artistic way to reveals our self.

Bakso then created the artificial hair style from hems, hays, and leafs and then presented them into a contemporary art performance alongside with his fellows artists. The whole performance in which include dancing's, musical performance, costume show and mask play was a set of Bakso's art-creating thesis at Indonesia Art Institute Surakarta - Central Java.

Chanson de Porong: the greed, the mud, and hopes

May, 29th 2006, massive hot mudflow from beneath Porong's soil reached the surface through the drilling pipe of Lapindo Brantas, Porong - East Java Indonesia. The hot mudflow then turns the surface into a sea of mud. Houses, farmings, ranches, industrial area, government's offices, banks and transportation wounded badly.

The life of Porong's residents has been changed from that date until now. Just like a ship without sailor, drifts in the sea of mud with no directions to go. The hot mudflow forced them to leave their comfort home sweet home and all belongings hopelessly.

The mud has flooding everything except one thing, a hope for a bright new day in the future, on a peaceful dwelling area just like the one they used to have. Just before the greed of human being for the natural resources destroy everything as now.
